I recently found myself in a situation I never expected, and one that reminded me just how quickly life can shift from ordinary to terrifying.

I was heading home from a hike, making my way down a remote gravel road, when I heard a clanging sound coming from the back of my car. I assumed it was the dog bowls I keep back there. Nothing unusual.

Until I pressed the brake pedal.

It went straight to the floor.

Suddenly, I was facing a very different kind of descent. I was miles from anyone, had no cell service and had nearly 4,000 feet of winding downhill road ahead of me. The road was narrow, with no guardrails and a canyon below.

My brake fluid warning light came on, followed by the power steering light.

There was no time to panic, although I was absolutely terrified and surprisingly calm. My focus became incredibly sharp. I was thinking about the road ahead, the terrain, and where I might be able to steer if I lost control completely. My only goal was to get down safely.

For nearly an hour, I navigated that descent with an intensity of focus I don’t think I’ve ever experienced. When I finally reached level ground and cell service, I pulled over and called for a tow.

I was safe. And incredibly grateful.

What an Unexpected Experience Taught Me About Uncertainty

The experience reminded me of something I’ve come to understand over the years: we don’t always get to choose what happens to us, but we do have some say in how we respond.

When circumstances are beyond our control, we can either become consumed by the uncertainty or focus on what we can do in the moment.

It’s a lesson that applies to just about everything, including real estate.

Navigating Uncertainty in Real Estate

Whether you’re buying, selling, navigating a big life transition or simply trying to figure out what’s next, uncertainty has a way of creeping in. Between the headlines, the economy, interest rates and the constant flow of opinions, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

After more than two decades in real estate, I’ve learned that markets change, circumstances change, and no two transactions are ever alike. What remains important is having good information, a thoughtful plan and the ability to navigate the unexpected.

Uncertainty is part of life, and it can be especially challenging when making major real estate decisions. Whether you’re buying a home, selling a property, or navigating a life transition, reliable information, a thoughtful plan, and trusted local guidance can help you move forward with greater confidence. Here are five reminders I come back to when life feels uncertain.

1. Step Away from the Noise and Gain Perspective

Sometimes the best thing we can do is stop scrolling, stop analyzing, and step outside. Take the dog for a walk, meet a friend for coffee, get on your yoga mat or simply enjoy a little fresh air. Perspective often comes when we give ourselves room to breathe.

2. Write Down Your Questions and Priorities

Write down your questions, concerns and priorities. What matters most? What are you worried about? What do you actually have control over? Sometimes putting things on paper is the first step toward finding clarity.

3. Consider the What-Ifs and Prepare for Change

Thinking through possible scenarios isn’t being negative; it’s being prepared. Whether it’s an unexpected home inspection, a change in plans or a decision that doesn’t go as anticipated, understanding your options can make the unknown feel a little less intimidating.

4. Take Care of Yourself During Major Decisions

Big life decisions can be exhausting. Don’t let the process consume you. Prioritize sleep, movement, nourishing food and time with the people you love. A little balance can make a big difference in how we show up for life’s challenges.

5. Get Informed and Seek Local Real Estate Guidance

There is no shortage of opinions or information. But more information doesn’t always mean more clarity. Seek out knowledgeable people who understand your circumstances, are willing to have honest conversations and can help you separate facts from noise. In real estate, local knowledge and context matter.

Finding Your Footing Through Life’s Uncertainties

I don’t think any of us gets through life without a little uncertainty. My recent experience on that mountain road reminded me that we don’t always get to choose the circumstances we’re handed. But we can pause, assess what’s in front of us, focus on what we can control and take the next best step.

The real estate market will continue to evolve. Life will throw us a few curveballs, too. There will be seasons of opportunity, seasons that require patience and moments when the original plan needs adjusting.

That’s part of the journey.

Whatever you’re navigating right now, you don’t have to figure it all out at once. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is focus on what’s right in front of you.
